The Mystic Onyx breed was originally developed by Hoover’s Hatchery in very recent years. Although at Poultry Garden's our concentration is on rare breeding stock, as chicken math would have it, we grabbed a few of these when we had less stock and they were such lovely birds, their carefree nature grew on us and stayed.
If you're newer to raising chickens or just looking for a touch of something different that is outright a healthy, hardy, and energetic breed, the Mystic Onyx is a great addition with a different flare. Their beautiful feathers and black skin are striking. While they were created to be a meat bird, there is a reason they are taking backyard flocks by storm!
The Mystic Onyx irridescent feathering is absolutely gorgeous. These chickens were created by combining a Silkie and a meat production bird. Because of this, they carry unique characteristics such as 5 toes, an occasional feather tuft on the top of their heads, and black skin. They also have very dark meat and bones (melanistic).
While they look very similar to the Ayam Cemani, it is not considered a fault to have orange-red flares or dark mulberry skin in the Mystic Onyx. Their black feathers have an iridescent green sheen as well as some purples. Just our opinion, but we believe that the majority of preditors think they are crows, as our only loss of Mystic Onyx, has been to a coon getting in the pen with our very first hens. We quickly replaced them, and although we have had other preditor issues out in the woods and lake country, we have not lost one Mystic Onyx to a fox or bird of prey including the few that have had mullberry or partial red feathering. Our Mystic Onyx free range daily and can often be seen foraging in the horse pasture.
Mystic Onyx are great egg layers and lay up to 225 light brown, medium sized eggs per year. They will do well in the winter as well as the summer and keep their production up in the winter months. They are docile, but active. They love to be in the middle of all the action and if fed treats by hand as chicks will be in your face for them as adults.
Mystic Onyx chickens reach anywhere between 5-6 lbs. and rarely go broody. They have a single comb and are very low maintenance.
All eggs shipped will be from solid black hens. We have one black roo and one roo with some red feathering. Both are full melanistic skin color. Our stock tend to get about 90-95% all black chicks. All chicks are straight run.
Farm Visits
FOR BIOSECURITY REASONS: We do allow a limited number of farm visits with purchase only. This is by appointment ONLY as we have biosecurity measures in place that must be adhered to prior to entering our farm. This is due to the dangers that it could cause to our birds. Our birds and breeding lines are our priority In hopes that we can keep our birds healthy and provide you with the quality that you expect as well as continue to improve future quality of poultry available in breeding programs!
Egg Shipments
We offer eggs from different breeds, with some breeds that are difficult to find in the United States. We mail eggs to you so you can watch them hatch in your own incubator.
We sell eggs in quantities of 6 and 12 depending on availability. We do not start selling hatching eggs until after chick orders are filled.

WE CAN NOT GUARENTEE HATCH RATES! WE DO NOT REPLACE HATCHING EGGS DUE TO LOW OR NO HATCH RATES,
We consider evaluate every egg we collect and are very careful in packaging our eggs. They are all packed in multiple layers of soft foam, to make sure they arrive in good conditions. We cannot control how they are handled once they leave our hands, but our local USPS office is very aware of the pride we have in our eggs and chicks. We mark every box clearly, FRAGILE, and ask that they not be x-rayed by usps. Rough handling, extreme hot/cold, incubation practices, etc. all effect hatch rate. By purchasing hatching eggs, you agree you have read and understand this policy.
We do recommend that you let your eggs settle for 12 hours prior to settle prior to placing them in your incubator. Our eggs are not washed, but they are sprayed with a disinfecting solution as this is proven by research to increase hatch rates. Eggs which have NOT been disinfected can carry bacteria that affects hatch rates.
