Orpingtons have some of the most beautiful soft and fluffy feathers. Combine this with their broad chest and back and they are darling as well as very calm and docile. They are winter hardy and have become one of our favorite flocks. These are quite large chickens and classified as a dual purpose breed.

They lay approximately 150 large brown eggs per year and make excellent mothers. In fact they love to nest so much they do sometimes go broody waiting on motherhood. This is due to natural hormone spikes and to alleviate the strong desire to we push our hens to get lots of sunlight and shut them out of the nest boxes for parts of the day to cool their hot bellies. This seems to do the trick with most and they are back to laying within a few days.

William Cook set about creating a fowl “of handsome appearance and a good winter layer” and presented the result at three major National shows in 1886. Named after the Kentish town where it was developed, the first Blacks were quickly followed by Buff, White, Jubilee, Spangled, Cuckoo and White, all of which are standardized today. The increase in bulk and feather in the thirties gave us the exhibition fowl we know today.

Chocolate is a sex link color and dilutes the black gene. A Chocolate rooster over non-chocolate rooster = all visually chocolate hens and non-chocolate roosters with a single chocolate gene (split to chocolate). A non-chocolate rooster over a chocolate hen = non-chocolate hens and visually non chocolate roosters with a single chocolate gene (split to chocolate) Black orpingtons should be black with a green sheen.
