Hatching now! Ship date 4/22. We added the Silver Spangled Appenzeller Spitzhauben to our feather gardens in 2024. ALL OF OUR STOCK ARE FROM BREEDER STOCK AND NOT FROM LARGE HATCHERIES.

We were looking for a variety with a bit of unique character and to be able offer a white egg layer in a beautiful bird. The Appenzeller's fit this agenda and are quite prolific egg layers. Everything about them stands out as a unique chicken. They are crested with a specific forward facing crest that should not be overly poofy and should be upright, not protruding out the sides past the eye. The Appenzeller's should not have a foofy polish type crest.

They also have a unique comb that resemble two small horns. Their color pattern is white with small tear drop shaped spots. We have also found them to be quite winter hardy despite the their lean and longer legged stature.

Appenzellers are small- to medium-sized chickens native to the Appenzell canton of northeast Switzerland near the German and Austrian borders. (Switzerland is comprised of 26 districts called cantons.) Appenzell is an alpine region with a strong tradition of herding and other agricultural enterprises. Spitzhauben are ceremonial hats worn as part of elaborate costumes by the women of the region, and they sport a large crest on the top of the bonnet. In about the 1500s a chicken breed emerged in the monasteries of Appenzell, and the birds had a forward-thrusting crest of feathers on their heads. It was only natural that the birds would be locally called Appenzeller Spitzhauben.

When free ranging our Appenzeller's love to roost in higher tree branches and fly extremely well. This seems to make them fairly predator proof as well. We do not free range out of their runs during laying season.

  • Farm Visits

FOR BIOSECURITY REASONS: We do allow a limited number of farm visits with purchase only.  This is by appointment ONLY as we have biosecurity measures in place that must be adhered to prior to entering our farm. This is due to the dangers that it could cause to our birds. Our birds and breeding lines are our priority In hopes that we can keep our birds healthy and provide you with the quality that you expect as well as continue to improve future quality of poultry available in breeding programs!

  • Egg Shipments

We offer eggs from different breeds, with some breeds that are difficult to find in the United States. We mail eggs to you so you can watch them hatch in your own incubator.

We sell eggs in quantities of 6 and 12 depending on availability.  We do not start selling hatching eggs until after chick orders are filled.

    • NOTE:  We will begin shipping hatching eggs in May, if  they are available before, will notify you.  NOTE: Chicks Orders will be filled before any eggs orders.

    • With Eggs  orders please add a note with your phone number as well.

    • Purchase of one item includes 6+ eggs.  If you are ordering a dozen you would select 2 items.

WE CAN NOT GUARENTEE  HATCH RATES! WE DO NOT REPLACE HATCHING EGGS DUE TO LOW OR NO HATCH RATES,

We consider evaluate every egg we collect and are very careful in packaging our eggs. They are all packed in multiple layers of soft foam, to make sure they arrive in good conditions.  We cannot control how they are handled once they leave our hands, but our local USPS office is very aware of the pride we have in our eggs and chicks. We mark every box clearly, FRAGILE, and ask that they not be x-rayed by usps. Rough handling, extreme hot/cold, incubation practices, etc. all effect hatch rate. By purchasing hatching eggs, you agree you have read and understand this policy.

We do recommend that you let your eggs settle for 12 hours prior to settle prior to placing them in your incubator.  Our eggs are not washed, but they are sprayed with a disinfecting solution as this is proven by research to increase hatch rates.  Eggs which have NOT been disinfected can carry bacteria that affects hatch rates.
